I pay $800 a month in this small rural town, but I get free cable, electricity, and water. Is this a good deal?

The room is clean, free of bugs (except a few), free of mold (surprisingly).

I'm not really 'up-to-snuff' on the rental market; but small apartment rentals in your described-size town are probably not plentiful.
So, if you like and are satisfied with the accommodations that you have, seems like a pretty good deal to me. Most especially with cable, electric, and water included (and I'm guessing garbage bill??)

I've stayed at quite a few extended stay hotels over the years, and I'd say that's pretty reasonable. I'd advise getting an apartment and just having one or two roommates though. Paying month to month at some motel isn't a stable living situation. I'm sure you don't have a lease, and I'd imagine you don't have any of the standard tenant protections that you would have with a legitimate rental agreement. I don't know your situation, but that's my understanding from others who have lived that lifestyle.

I've got a married partner which is a problem for shared houses etc.

A problem with cheap motels, but not where I'm at, is mold

One problem is you don't have a reference for someone to check when you put in an application for an apartment. There isn't a good paper trail for them to check and see if you paid on time, which is what they want from their tenants.

This type of living is okay for now, but don't make this a rest of your life deal because you deserve better.

There's literally nothing available in this small town.
